Lotza Yellow

Guarda! Now you get a glimpse of the top edge of Mr. Jailbreak. There is a whole lotta yellow going on in here. I mean, I like yellow, but is this really necessary? Really?!

I made a pretty decent drawing too. It is a drawing of a boat, broken in half, with an arm languishing on deck. There is also an erupting volcano in the background. I am considering changing it into a tornado.

Jail House Tattoo

Here is the "jailbreak" as of last Tuesday. The green curtain is finished now and I have started in on the pattern on the floor. I figured that I would work out the biggest challenges first then move into the things that I am more confident about. But, as experience has taught me, the things that I think I know are invariably more difficult than the things I haven't tackled before.

Oh!  Sorry. The top margin got chopped off. You will be seeing it soon enough I am sure.

That's Bananas!

The Cinecitta Chapel Project has a venue! The kind people at Flashpoint have taken it on. Dates aren't solidified yet, but we are thinking late spring/early summer of 2010. That should be a realistic time frame to get these things painted and devise an interesting show.

In other fantastic news, the dates for the Gross McCleaf show are solidified. The show runs from June 20th - July 24th with the reception on July 10. My dear friends Jay and Dorothy are also exhibiting.

I just returned from vacation to sunny CA with a cold and loads of inspiration from the SoCal landscape. The cowboys might just be battling at Laguna Beach very soon.

I have most of the day today to focus in the studio, so I will post some cowboy images soon.

Macho Package

Grant materials, not all but most, arrived about a week ago. With everything else that went on last week, I haven't been able to get to the studio to take inventory of it all. So tonight will be Christmas Part Deux, when I break open the packages to see what terrific quantities of paint and stuff I received. More than that I am in a total mania about getting these stretchers built and getting these paintings moving!

Day 6: Shootout at Tocqueville

Nearing the gates of the Tocqueville Pen, there is a terrific shootout! Everyone missed their target. Even the knife victim was spared. Oh! Rapturous Day! Peace reigns.

I wish it could read more like..."a man in a banana suit performing fake kung-fu moves in a tavern." Maybe that is a better fit for the first painting.

***I should add that these narrative vignettes aren't driving the paintings, but will eventually play a role after the paintings are made. Maybe. Depends on if some other things fall into place.***

Day 5: Re-Apprehension

He takes flight into the hills upon realizing that his second sacrifice is rejected by authorities. As the Law approaches we see Our Man in repose, exhausted after some light gun-play and a Ballantine, wondering whose favor he must placate for acceptance.

*** For continuity the tone of "Day 4" should be considered more of a sacrifice narrative rather than malicious arson.

Day 4: Arson! (Fun with "Translators")

After days on the run, subsisting on lichens and the leaden water bubbling from the ground; our hero finds himself delirious and committing reckless acts against the nation's pastime. He maintains that he was merely reaching out to snag a routine fly ball and that it was, in fact, the bird's nest that ignited the match in his hand. The case remains open to this day.

[After the days on the operation, sussistendo davanti licheni and the plumbea water that bubbles from the earth; our hero finds delirious rash actions and committing against the pastime of the nation. It carries out that only it was catching up outside in order to recall a sphere of systematic Moscow and that was, in fact, the nest of the bird that has burnt the match in its hand. The case is opened to this day.]

Day 3: Lunchtime Jailbreak

After being transferred to a medium security facility in Mellville, He stages a midday escape of his 12 foot ceiling, 500 sq. ft. cell; with herringbone pattern hardwood floor and hand-loomed Turkmen carpet (ideally suited for studio or living) while the guards look on in either wonder or at their time pieces.

Day 2: The Law

He is apprehended for his behavior and taken in to the "holdin' shed" by local authorities.
He is disgraced.

The Complete Studies Day 1: Expulsion

Expulsion From the Green Derby

He is expelled from his favorite watering hole for belligerence. Veuve Clicquot sends him into rages. Must be the bubbles. The Barkeep rejected his payment of screws, a button and other miscellany.

**Expect one image per day for six business days**

Read-A-Long Cassidy

Here are some reading materials pertinent to the project:
The Usurer's Heart by Anne Derbes and Mark Sandona
The Collected Works of Billy the Kid by Michael Ondaatje
**without whom I probably wouldn't have thought of this**

A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present by Howard Zinn
(you can read an excerpt here)

Democracy In America by Alexis de Tocqueville

There are some other Barthes essays about image, text, and myth that I am exploring, but this list is already pretentious enough.

p.s. for a Tocqueville subcategory you can check out American Vertigo by Henri Bernard-Levy, or America by Jean Baudrillard. They are nearly identical in form and subject, however Bernard-Levy "travels in the footsteps of Tocqueville".

ChiChaProa (Chee-Cha-Pro-ah) Rises!

With the generous support of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Young Emerging Artist Program we can officially say that the Cinecitta Chapel Project has begun in earnest. In truth it began almost a year ago, but whose counting.

Since having two blogs would have meant that I was posting to one while it was reporting to both, I decided to turn the 'studio apparatus" over to the Cinecitta Chapel Project. Content-wise it will differ very slightly.

So, now with a renewed sense of focus...we're off.
