One Vacation Puryear

I am on vacation. Actually, I am in the studio until Friday, then the beach, with a quick appearance at the Inquiry Show in Philly. Then back to the beach.

I went to see the Martin Puryear retrospective last week, and of course loved it. His sculptures are one of the first to make sense to me as a young artist trying to make sense of things. ( I think I even tried to make a "Puryear" in a 3-D design class. It ended up looking more like Rauschenberg.)

I think his sculptures are conceptual without being didactic. They are byzantine in their intricacy, while not immediately seeming so. I'll talk more about this later. I need a repeat viewing and my head is already being pounded by surf.

Ta.
